Bristol girls’ school gets active
24 January 2012
VPM Jess North is lending a hand to widen community action for Year 10 and 11 students at Colston’s Girls’ School in Bristol. The school, which already has a vested interest in helping local charities, will be assisted in creating student-led initiatives within school and in the wider community. Jess says, ‘Allowing the students to be at the forefront of organising and planning events will mean they are able to gain valuable experience and use the hours they put in towards WWV Certificates. I hope to take inspiration from the girls themselves and set up a few different projects and events that we can plan and maintain throughout the school year.’ Tutors at Colston’s are keen to develop ideas such as a peer mentoring scheme and a charity fashion show, where Jess will be on hand to offer structure and support in a very busy academic environment.
Jess will be presenting to Year 10 and 11 students again this term and work with a selected group of young people to build up volunteering ideas. Her presence will offer students the chance to suggest, develop, organise and run their own events and schemes. Tutors are very enthusiastic about the partnership with WWV and excited to see the girls’ creativity in action. The students are proving eager to get involved as well as Rosie G illustrates - ‘Thank you so much for coming into school and doing the assembly, I really enjoyed it! I am very interested in doing the mentoring scheme!’
